A Dazzling Five-Star Retreat Among Boa Vista Hotels

When you see the desert-like appearance of this chunk of volcanic land in the middle of the Atlantic, it is hard to believe that it was once covered with vegetation. Recurring droughts and poor agricultural management reduced Boa Vista and its Cape Verdean sisters to an arid, almost lunar landscape. Today, the biggest attraction of this island which emerges hesitantly from the ocean is its exceptional coast, with beaches trapped among imposing dunes and crystal clear waters. The desert interior is cooled down by a few palm tree oasis which add a touch of green to the landscape. Hotel options on the island of Boa Vista are still limited, making it a destination far from mass tourism.

It is a tranquil island whose greatest feature is its idyllic beaches. However, those looking for something more active than laying on the sand will also find spots to visit and activities in which to take part. Here are a few suggestions for spending two fabulous days on the Cape Verdean Coast.

Day 1: Have Fun in Boa Vista

If you want to get to know Boa Vista as soon as you arrive, we recommend a unique and fun way to do so. Rent a Quad Bike. In a few minutes you will learn how to ride one and you will have the best vehicle for traveling the area's complicated roads and be able to ride on the dunes of the beaches and desert. Remember to drive with caution and follow all of the instructions from the rental agency.

Obviously your main goal should be to find the beach of your dreams, ride the beaten paths and get to know the best spots on the island. Take the opportunity to visit some of the ships which sank on the Cape Verdean shores or the Morro Negro Lighthouse, located at the easternmost tip of the archipelago.

Day 2: Spotting Animals in the Wild

Cape Verde is one of the best places in the world for turtle and whale watching. Head to the port of Sal Rei and get in touch with one of the many boats which can take you on an excursion to the best areas to see one of these marine animals. Take advantage of this opportunity to admire the island's wonderful landscapes viewed from the sea.

Spend the afternoon playing. The area is particularly good for snorkeling and scuba diving. Dive in to see its rich coral communities, which, although they do not form an authentic reef, do provide a stunning view. If you are looking for excitement, you should know that in certain areas, such as Gatas Bay, you can sometimes see nurse sharks, which are not carnivorous and which many guides will be able to point out to you. Be sure to get quality diving equipment and an expert instructor. If scuba diving is not your idea of a good time, make the most of Boa Vista's waves and learn to surf, windsurf or bodyboard, and if you are already an expert, ask where you can find the best waves at the area schools and nautical centers. At day's end, relax at ClubHotel Riu Karamboa or Hotel Riu Touareg which have all of the services you could want. Boa Vista will not disappoint!
