The "Pearl of the Pacific" will dazzle you. Its exceptional beaches, ideal for bathing and many sea-related activities add to the charm of old Mazatlán, with sophisticated art galleries, elegant buildings and its unmistakable cathedral, the city's neurological center. We have a few suggestions in case it is difficult for you to choose among the multitude of options available to you in Mazatlán, situated in the famous Sinaloa region.
Day 1: Visit the Historic Center of Mazatlán
If you spend your vacation at Hotel Riu Emerald Bay, you should spend a day getting to know old Mazatlán. To do so, head to the southern part of the city were the oldest buildings are located. It is a peaceful area where you can meander down narrow streets, admire its colonial architecture, its cafes and terraces and its porticoes. The small plazas full of life with their benches, trees and kiosks are also very typical to this area, among which of particular note are Plazuela República, the city's main plaza, where the cathedral, the Municipal Palace and the main post office is located; Plazuela Machado, one of the oldest and most active, as it often holds exhibits, fairs, carnivals and shows; and Plazuela Sánchez Taboada, where divers put on a daily performance.
You should also visit the Pino Suárez market, a unique building because of its history and architecture, where you can find all sorts of products and interesting crafts and the famous Mazatlán lighthouse, located on the top of the Cerro del Crestón, encircled by cliffs and outcrops in a cavernous area which is surrounded by many legends of pirates and hidden treasures.
Day 2: What to do in Sinaloa
If you like excitement, forget about walks today and dive into the sea and enjoy whatever water sport you like: learn to glide along the waves surfing or windsurfing, immerse yourself in the ocean during a snorkeling or scuba diving session, or simply have a boat take you for a day of recreational fishing, or to see the area's spectacular coast or to the nearby port of La Piedra Island or the Tres Islas complex(deer, wolves , and birds) where you can delight in its beaches and its unique flora and fauna.
If you prefer something more relaxing, plan an excursion to a nearby town. For example, visits to Cosalá are very popular and you will enjoy a complete day where you will see waterfalls, old gold and silver mines, springs, enchanted mansions and pre-Hispanic petroglyphs.
