The Island of Sal is one of the ten islands that comprise the Cape Verde archipelago. With a surface area of 216 square kms., it houses a population of 7,500 inhabitants. The population is largely concentrated in Espargos, the capital, located in the centre of the island, and near to the Amílcar Cabral international airport. The town of Santa María has become the tourist resort on the South coast, where the hotels on the seashore offer their guests luxury and a wide variety of leisure activities.
The extensive beach of Santa María, which is 8 kms. long, is without doubt one of the island’s main attractions. A truly exceptional beach, with golden sands and warm, crystalline waters, considered to be one of the five best destinations in the world for windsurfing. Those who love deep-sea fishing will also find their own personal paradise on the Island of Sal. The clubs in Santa María have all the material needed for this sport and organise periodic trips. |
