Puerto del Carmen, formerly a small fishing village now has two resort areas: Playa de los Pocillos and Playa Matagorda, which have converted this part of the island into a lively holiday destination. The long promenade is a great place for a stroll; this is where the souvenir shops, bars, discos and restaurants are to be found.
The light-brown beach of fine sand is very flat and is broken up by various coves: the beach of Playa Blanca (Puerto del Carmen), the large Los Pocillos beach, and Matagorda beach which is 6 kms. from the town centre. Due to the location of the airport, planes can sometimes be heard in Playa de los Pocillos. There is a regular bus service to Arrecife (every 15-20 minutes). Distance from the airport: approx 8 -10 kms. |
