That is why RIU Hotels has launched a<strong> campaign to look for \u201csmile savers\u201d<\/strong> who want to help <strong>prevent and treat this disease<\/strong>, which can be cured quickly with strong antibiotics if it is diagnosed early.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 900px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-13218-1\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/animaci\u00f3n-fundaci\u00f3n-campaner-EN-REDES.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/animaci\u00f3n-fundaci\u00f3n-campaner-EN-REDES.mp4\">https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/animaci\u00f3n-fundaci\u00f3n-campaner-EN-REDES.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Twenty-four hotels in Spain will sell <strong>\u201csmile savers\u201d wristbands for \u20ac3 <\/strong>each while stocks last. The funds raised will help the Campaner Foundation carry on running <strong>projects that improve the quality of life for people in Niger,<\/strong> one of the poorest regions in the world, and where the organisation attends to 1,000 children each month.<\/p>\n<p>Noma is an infectious disease caused by poor hygiene, which damages the soft and hard tissues in the face, destroying the lips, nose, mouth and even eyes.<\/p>\n<p>At present, there is a service centre with several facilities: <strong>shelters<\/strong> for excluded or orphaned children (in Diffa and Niamey), a <strong>health centre <\/strong>for family medical care and a <strong>primary school <\/strong>for children aged 6 to 12.<\/p>\n<p>With the collaboration of RIU Hotels, in 2018 the Campaner Foundation successfully <strong>housed seven children in the shelter<\/strong> in Diffa and 39 in Niamey. It also carried out <strong>26 cleft palate operations<\/strong> in the Diffa public hospital, eight people pursued<strong> university studies<\/strong> in Niamey and 50 pupils started <strong>primary school<\/strong> in Diffa. In addition, a daily average of 40 people were attended at the Diffa walk-in service and the <strong>workforce of 7 people was maintained, along with the 9 members of staff <\/strong>at the Niamey centre. And, more good news! This year, <strong>three nurses are being recruited<\/strong> to support the Diffa hospital.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FOTO2.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FOTO2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FOTO2-250x166.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FOTO2-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FOTO2-700x465.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FOTO2-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pep Campaner, <\/strong>a former employee of RIU in Mallorca, and his wife <strong>Marilena Navarro, created the Campaner Foundation in 1996 <\/strong>after fostering a 4-year-old girl in 1995 who was transferred to Mallorca for facial reconstruction surgery. Pep then decided to travel to Niger to better understand these children\u2019s situation and, moved by what he saw, he decided to commit to improving the situation for them and their families.<\/p>\n<p>On his return, Pep Campaner told Carmen Riu, the current owner and CEO of RIU Hotels, about the cruel reality that thousands of children in Niger are still experiencing. In less than a week, the <strong>Riu Buena Vista hotel in Tenerife was the first to sell all of its wristbands.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At RIU Hotels we are deeply committed to the Sustainable Development Goals, which we approach through numerous initiatives under the banner of <strong>Be RIUsponsible<\/strong>.
