The nation boasts a stunning natural wealth and is the<strong> third most important turtle nesting area in the world<\/strong>, being <strong>essential for the reproduction and breeding of<\/strong> <strong>loggerhead turtles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sea turtles have been <strong>swimming in the oceans for 100 million years<\/strong> and are at the top of the food chain of most marine ecosystems, helping to <strong>keep the oceans healthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15956 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Foto-1_EN-700x393.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Foto-1_EN-700x393.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Foto-1_EN-250x140.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Foto-1_EN-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Foto-1_EN-120x67.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>At RIU,<\/strong> we\u2019ve been working for several years with <strong>two<\/strong> <strong>local NGOs in Cape Verde<\/strong> that are committed to designing conservation strategies for the country&#8217;s ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We follow these NGOs\u2019 <strong>recommendations<\/strong> for the <strong>protection of the turtle nests<\/strong> on the beaches and for the preservation of their habitat.<\/li>\n<li>We carry out <strong>information activities<\/strong> such as visits accompanied by authorised guides and turtle releases.<\/li>\n<li>We discourage people from eating turtle meat and eggs, and from buying products made from their shells.<\/li>\n<li>We provide financial <strong>support for the nocturnal beach patrols and volunteer camps in the laying and hatching season<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>We avoid activities and events on the beach, and we do without lighting at night in the areas around our hotels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the roles that sea turtles play in the ecosystem have a <strong>direct or indirect benefit<\/strong> for humans.<\/p>\n<p>Through projects such as the one we support in Cape Verde, <strong>we also benefit the local population,<\/strong> who can find employment as security guards, awareness raisers on educational programmes in schools or tour guides for visitors. This all has an important socioeconomic impact on the coastal communities where we operate.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PROJETO BIODIVERDSIDADE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Projeto Biodiversidade recorded <strong>15,000 new turtle nests<\/strong> in 2018, four times as many as in 2016, and 96% up on last year.<\/li>\n<li>In Sal, <strong>98,195 turtle hatchlings<\/strong> were released from the hatcheries, which is 12 times more than in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>In the hatcheries located in RIU hotels on Sal island, <strong>71%<\/strong> of the <strong>1,958 nests<\/strong> that the NGO relocated were monitored.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>BIOS CV<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In Boa Vista, <strong>14,598 nests<\/strong> were recorded, three times more than in 2017.<\/li>\n<li><strong>64,528 hatchlings<\/strong> were released from the monitored hatcheries.
