{"id":16731,"date":"2019-11-19T09:53:59","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T08:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/?p=16731"},"modified":"2019-11-19T09:53:59","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T08:53:59","slug":"when-armstrong-stepped-into-the-riu-palace-oasis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/en\/when-armstrong-stepped-into-the-riu-palace-oasis\/","title":{"rendered":"When Armstrong stepped into the Riu Palace Oasis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>50 years have passed since man walked on the moon, specifically a crew of three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were the first and only men who have achieved this feat up until now.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>RIU were chosen to welcome the astronauts following their long journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Following this event which caused a worldwide sensation the three astronauts began a world tour which took them to 21 countries. Before setting off on their tour they decided to take a few days to rest and recover together with their wives: the place chosen was the Oasis Maspalomas hotel on the island of Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16763 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong-700x454.jpg\" alt=\"Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins after returning from their trip to the moon\" width=\"700\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong-700x454.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong-250x162.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong-120x78.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/aldrin-collins-armstrong.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, five hundred meters away from the hotel was an area of land given to NASA where they installed their Maspalomas space station, one of the first in the world from where they broadcast man&#8217;s moon landing. It would seem that they were destined to meet.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>This is the beautiful story linking RIU and NASA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On 4 October 1969 the three astronauts arrived at the Oasis Hotel. The first of them was Edwin Aldrin with his wife, both of whom arrived on the Canarian Island on no less than Air Force One. They were later joined by Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins and their wives, although they arrived on scheduled flights. They stayed in the hotel for two days and they were given the hotel&#8217;s best suites. They chose Gran Canaria because of its dunes, and could be seen taking camel rides over them, as well as because of its crystal-clear Atlantic waters and for its hospitality which, as we can well imagine, exceeded all their expectations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16777 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria-700x497.jpg\" alt=\"The three astronauts enjoyed a boat ride around Gran Canaria's coves with their wives\" width=\"700\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria-700x497.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria-250x177.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria-768x545.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria-120x85.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/armnstrong-boat-wife-gran-canaria.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the two days they spent on the island they took the opportunity to relax in small coves nestled in the cliffs, such as Tirita\u00f1a where they organized magnificent picnics but they also took boat and fishing trips. They also really enjoyed Canary Island cuisine, so much so that Neil Armstrong&#8217;s wife, Janet, took the recipe for mojo pic\u00f3n sauce back to the United States.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/astronaut-gran-canaria.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/astronaut-gran-canaria.jpg\" alt=\"During their stay they enjoyed Gran Canaria's food and culture\" width=\"700\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/astronaut-gran-canaria.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/astronaut-gran-canaria-250x192.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/astronaut-gran-canaria-120x92.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The astronauts were met by an unexpected surprise at the hotel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the parties prepared in order for them to fully enjoy the Canarian nights, they were treated to a number of surprises.
