Today we’re going to tell you about Jamaica! Why is that? Because we just finished a new hotel in this beautiful land of colours<\/strong>, and at RIU<\/a> we’re extremely happy. It’s a place full of contrasts, and naturally it’s also full of surprises\u2026 Today we’re going to tell you some curious things about Jamaica.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"jamaica_04_012-copiar\"<\/a>1.\u00a0Do you know where the name ‘Jamaica<\/a>‘ comes from? It’s an indigenous word that means ‘land of wood and water’.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. The national dish is salt cod<\/strong>. There are also typical breads in this place, like roti<\/em>, a flat bread that the indigenous people used to make, and bammy<\/em>, a pie-shaped fried bread.<\/p>\n

3. Reggae music was born in Jamaica, and it started among the Afro-Jamaican population. The most famous reggae singer was Bob Marley<\/strong>, and there are those who say that this musical style started with him.<\/p>\n

\"jamaica_07_050-copiar\"<\/a>4.\u00a0On this list, we also are going to talk to you about pirates. <\/strong>Henry Morgan had his base in Kingston Bay<\/strong> and was one of the area’s most famous pirates who ravished the regions of Panama, Cuba and Maracaibo.<\/p>\n

5. Jamaica was first a Spanish colony and later an English one, until the 6th of August 1962, when it gained its independence. In fact, it was the first Caribbean country to proclaim its independence. <\/strong>And, it’s the third largest island<\/strong> in the Caribbean, after Cuba and Hispaniola.<\/p>\n

\"jamaica_04_010-copiar\"<\/a>6.\u00a0Jamaica has won a tremendous number of Olympic medals<\/strong>. Jamaica’s Usain Bolt won three Olympic medals and was chosen three times as the fastest runner on earth.<\/p>\n

7. Jamaica was the first country in America to build a railway<\/strong>; the Jamaicans actually did it before the Americans.<\/p>\n

8. Let’s end the myth! Drugs are totally prohibited in this country<\/strong>. Alcohol consumption, as long as you’re of legal age, is not prohibited.<\/p>\n
