A potted history of the Dominican Republic<\/h2>\n

Located on the island of Hispaniola and surrounded by the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, the Dominican Republic borders Haiti and has a population of 11 million people. Its capital, Santo Domingo<\/b><\/strong>, which was the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, is the most frequently visited destination in the Caribbean. There you can get lost in the colonial city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will find the oldest cathedral in the Americas (the Catedral Primada de Am\u00e9rica, from the 16th century), as well as the first castle in America, the Palace of the Viceroy Don Diego Col\u00f3n, in Plaza Espa\u00f1a. If you are looking for nature, the Dominican Republic is an endless well of magical places to lose yourself in. From Pico Duarte, the highest mountain in the Caribbean, to Saona Island, located in the Parque Nacional del Este, a true paradise dominated by crystal clear turquoise water, fine white sand and huge coconut trees.<\/p>\n
