How ECOSTARS works at RIU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hotel sustainability certification is an endorsement granted by an external body to verify that a hotel measures and manages its environmental impact using objective, comparable criteria. At RIU Hotels &amp; Resorts, every hotel that has been operating for more than a year holds the ECOSTARS certification: 101 hotels in 22 countries. We were the first hotel chain in the world to certify all of its operating hotels with this seal, and we did it one year ahead of the target set in Proudly Committed (2023-2026), our sustainability strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a hotel certification?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you choose a hotel, you probably look at its stars. Stars indicate the category of the establishment: its facilities, its services and its level of comfort, according to the regulations of each country or region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sustainability certification answers a different question: how the hotel manages the resources it uses and the impact it generates. It doesn\u2019t measure the size of the rooms or the number of restaurants, but aspects such as energy and water use or waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most robust sustainability certifications share three features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>External assessment:<\/strong> they are granted by an independent body, not by the hotel itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Measurable criteria:<\/strong> they are based on consumption data, not on statements of intent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ongoing monitoring:<\/strong> the hotel continues to report information on its performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the ECOSTARS certification assess?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecostars.ai\/es\/\">ECOSTARS<\/a> is an artificial intelligence and ESG (environmental, social and governance) platform designed specifically for the hotel industry. It is recognised internationally by UN Tourism (formerly the World Tourism Organization) and, in Spain, by the Spanish Tourism Council.etrics such as <strong>water saving<\/strong>, energy efficiency and waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Riu-palace-maspalomas-1600x1067.jpg\" alt=\"Cubierta Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our hotels, the platform allows us to accurately measure key indicators such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Energy efficiency.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water savings.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waste management.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What sets it apart is comparison. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/xisca-sitjar-puigserver-62a816334\/\">Xisca Sitjar<\/a>, RIU\u2019s Operational Sustainability Manager, explains, we chose ECOSTARS because it compares each of our hotels with a wide community of establishments with similar characteristics in similar destinations. This shows us where we are doing well and where there is room for improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform is also a key tool for calculating our Scope 3 carbon footprint, that is, the indirect impact of our entire value chain: from the food served at our buffets to the transport of supplies to our hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does a sustainability certification prove (and what doesn\u2019t it)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth understanding its scope so you can assess it fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What it does prove:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That the hotel measures its consumption with verifiable information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That these results are compared with those of similar establishments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That there is a commitment to management and continuous improvement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What it doesn\u2019t prove:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is not a luxury category and does not replace the hotel\u2019s star rating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It doesn\u2019t mean the hotel has zero environmental impact, but that it manages that impact rigorously and transparently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"825\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/riu-proudly-committed.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/riu-proudly-committed.png 825w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/riu-proudly-committed-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/www.riu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/riu-proudly-committed-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does a hotel certification matter to travellers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certification works mainly behind the scenes, in the hotel\u2019s day-to-day management. For you as a traveller, it brings several advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A reliable reference when choosing:<\/strong> if sustainability is one of your criteria when choosing a hotel, an external certification offers more assurance than any advertising message.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clear information through your travel agent:<\/strong> the platform generates a database of sustainability attributes that provides transparent information to travel agencies and tour operators.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A relevant factor for corporate events:<\/strong> if you organise conferences, incentives or meetings with sustainability criteria (the MICE segment), the certification helps you justify your choice of accommodation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Care for destinations:<\/strong> monitoring water and energy consumption helps to look after the places you visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did RIU certify 100% of its hotels?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The certification achieved in 2025 is the culmination of environmental management work that we began at RIU in 2012. After signing the agreement with ECOSTARS, we completed the process in less than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Energy- and water-saving technology only works if people manage it properly.
