A Day in Puerto Plata
On the country's northern costs, just a few kilometers from Puerto Plata, is the Bahia Maimon, which boasts crystalline water and toasted sand. It is a wonderful region for visitors who have surely chosen the Dominican Republic to spend their vacation because they want to enjoy its marvelous beaches, relaxing or taking part in water sports. Regardless, we recommend you spend a portion of your time getting to know the area surrounding you and enjoying some of the wonders you will find near your RIU hotel.
Day 1: The Best Excursions in Puerto Plata
If you want to go on an unforgettable excursion, we recommend you head to the waterfalls of the Damajagua River, a natural phenomenon which should be visited with a guide who can safely lead you on a seven kilometer walk which winds between the mountains amidst waterfalls, ponds, tunnels and slides and natural pools. It must be pointed out that it is not a tranquil walk, but rather an adventure which takes you through the river itself on a variety of paths which can be more or less difficult according to your abilities.
Another recommended and much more relaxed outing is through Parque Nacional la Isabela which contains the remains of the first colonial settlement on the island.
If you aren't one for excursions or if you would like a suggestion for another day, we suggest you visit Santiago, where you can learn about the history of the country you are visiting by taking a walk through the interesting Centro León, quite likely the most comprehensive museum in the Dominican Republic dedicated to sharing the communities symbols of identity, culture and artistic movements. Take advantage of your trip to Santiago to visit one of the tobacco or rum factories there which open their doors to show you the production process of what are two of the most traditional products of the area's economy. Nor should you miss a visit to the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración or the Mercado Modelos which houses a variety of local craft shops which will be a perfect place to buy some souvenirs of your stay.
When you need to recharge after a day of exploring the land, your best bet is to return to your Riu Hotel and enjoy the delicious specialties offered by its restaurants. To complete your day, you can live it up at club Pachá in front of ClubHotel Riu Merengue or at the Casino El Millón.
