Guadalajara in 2 Days

The capital of Jalisco is undoubtedly an extraordinary city full of culture, history and leisure opportunities. Modernity and tradition join forces in this city with the soul of a business center. It is easy to find beautiful colonial buildings, museums and cafes which contrast against the new infrastructure designed to make Guadalajara one of Latin America's biggest cultural showcases.
If you are going to spend a few days in Guadalajara, here are a few ideas to immerse yourself in the city.

Day 1: Visit Guadalajara's Historic District

What better way to get to know one of the most emblematic places in Guadalajara than to jump on an old streetcar? Do not miss this experience which takes you from City Hall in the historic center, located in Plaza Guadalajara, to the Minerva fountain. From the starting point you will be able to see the spectacular cathedral and the fountain which commemorates the city's founding. During the trip we suggest you get on and off to explore other interesting spots such as the Degollado Theater, the Plaza de Armas or the Hospicio Cabañas, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its one of a kind architecture and because it contains magnificent frescoes which are masterpieces of Mexican art.

When hunger strikes, dare to try some of the area's traditional delicacies. Make a stop to have some tortas ahogadas, sandwiches typical to Jalisco or birria, another typical dish made of meat, and traditional enchiladas tapatias.

In the afternoon, complete your visit to the city with another essential walk which will take you to Agua Azul Park, the traditional recreational area for the city's residences, a place which combines nature and culture and whose main attractions are the Butterfly House, the aviary, the orchid garden, an exhibit hall and a stage where live performances are held. It also houses the Paleontology Museum, which holds remains of the area's oldest inhabitants and fossils of prehistoric animals. Nor should you miss the Regional Museum of Guadalajara which is located in the city center inside an impressive building with a baroque facade.

To end your day, nothing beats returning to the Hotel Riu Plaza Guadalajara and enjoying a delicious dinner at its a la carte restaurant.

Day 2: The Tequila Trail and Theme Parks in Jalisco

Is there anything more Mexican than tequila? Whether you like tequila or not, we recommend you take a trip to the enormous agave fields and to some of the distilleries in Jalisco, considered the birthplace of tequila. If you want to learn about how this liquor is produced, another option is to visit the colonial town of Tlaquepaque and its tequila factory, an example of Mexico at its most traditional, located in the southeast portion of the city next to the town of Tonalá. Both towns are famous for their numerous workshops and clay, glass, leather, brass and fabric craft stalls, among others. You will not find a better place to go shopping and pick up the most authentic souvenirs.

However, if you are traveling with children, we have another suggestion. Pay a visit to one of the amusement theme parks where you can see animals from the various corners of the earth up close and climb aboard fun rides. If you want more excitement, perhaps you will dare to visit the Mundo Fantástico park, where you can take part in adventure sports, such as rock climbing in monitored facilities. This will have been a well-rounded day and you will most certainly need a rest and there is no place better to do so than at the Hotel Riu Plaza Guadalajara, which will await you with open arms and all of its services and amenities.
