Awaken your senses with a perfect wedding in Playa del Carmen

General wedding policies

The couple and 80% of their guests must stay at the same Riu Hotel where the wedding will be performed. Only 20% of the total group can stay at another hotel, wedding couple must purchase a established wedding package.

For weddings in Riu Palace Riviera Maya guests staying in Riu Palace Mexico will be able to attend the wedding ceremony without extra charge. Guests staying in Riu Yucatan, Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar would have to pay a Wedding pass of $45.00usd.  Guests staying in other hotels would have to pay a Wedding pass of $65.00usd (approximately) per person. Prices are subject to change without previous notice.


Couples have to arrive at least two (2) full business days for symbolic ceremony or Renewal of vows and three (3) full business days for a civil ceremony, prior the wedding date (arrival day, weekends or National Holidays don't count as full business days).

Weddings are not performed on Sundays & National holidays.

Confirmed weddings cancelled within a month of the ceremony date or upon arrival to the hotel will be charged a cancellation fee of $250.00 USD.


Maximum capacity for Weddings in Riu Palace Riviera Maya: 100 guests.

External vendors are allowed, if they are staying at the Hotel where the wedding will be performed or if they pay a Vendor's Fee of $200.00 USD per person.

Please consider that the only external vendor that is not allowed to enter to any Riu Hotel in Playa del Carmen is the florist.

**Name Changes: Names in a wedding confirmation submited through a third-party person and/or travel agents are not eligible for any changes. Please contact your assigned Wedding Reservations Executive or weddings@riu.com for assistance.

Documentation - Only for civil (legal) ceremonies

  1. Couple's and 4 witnesses valid Passports (regular copies)
  2. Couple's Turist cards (regular copies)
  3. Blood Tests, included in the wedding package (the wedding coordinator will schedule the appointment during the wedding planning process)
  4. Written parental consents for couples under 18 years old (original and apostilled)

The following documents must be presented in their original language only in cases where the couple wants their parent's names to be included in their Marriage Certificate:

  1. Couple's and 4 witnesses valid Passports (regular copies)
  2. Couple's Turist cards (regular copies)
  3. Blood Tests, included in the wedding package (the wedding coordinator will schedule the appointment during the wedding planning process)
  4. Written parental consents for couples under 18 years old (original and apostilled)
  5. Birth certificates (Bride & Groom)* - Original and Apostilled 
  6. Divorce Decree, if applies* (original and apostilled)

The following documents must be presented in their original language only in cases where the Bride wants to use her maiden name in the Marriage Certificate:

  1. Couple's and 4 witnesses valid Passports (regular copies)
  2. Couple's Turist cards (regular copies)
  3. Blood Tests, included in the wedding package (the wedding coordinator will schedule the appointment during the wedding planning process)

 For divorced Brides we have the following options:

  • If the Bride stills have her ex-husband's last name and wants to use again her maiden name she can make this change in her Passport (before she travels) since that is the information that we will use in the Marriage Certificate.
  • Once that the couple returns to their country and do the process of legalize their Marriage they will receive a new Marriage Certificate and they will be able to change her last name. 
  • If the Bride stills have her ex-husband's last name and wants to use again her maiden name in the Marriage Certificate she needs the bring following documents:
  1. Birth certificate* (original and apostilled)
  2. Divorce Decree* (original and apostilled)
  • Translation into Spanish:

    The required documents ( * ) must be translated into Spanish once that the couple has arrived to the Hotel.  The wedding coordinator will assist you with this procedure.
    Please consider that translation services have an additional cost of $50.00 usd per page (approximately) and the original documents will remain at Playa del Carmen's City Hall.  Translation fees are subject to change without previous notice. 

    Translation into spanish is required in the following cases:

    • The couple wants their parent's names to be included in their Marriage Certificate.
    • The Bride stills have her ex-husband's last name and wants to use her maiden name in the Marriage Certificate.
  • Apostille: Is a certified seal that authenticates the signature of the public official who has signed the document. An apostille certificate confirms the person who signed a document has the authority to do so and that the document should therefore be recognized as legal without further evidence in another member state of the Hague Convention.
    The apostille has to be required in the State where the document was issued. The Foreign Offices of each state and country can provide the apostille.
    The apostille must be done before your arrival to the Hotel.
  • Medical & blood tests: In order to celebrate a Civil Wedding in Mexico it is legally required to perform certain medical tests: HIV, syphilis and blood type.
    The wedding coordinator will schedule the appointment during the wedding planning process. Tests will be performed once that the couple arrives to the Hotel, at the Wedding Coordinator's Office.
    It is very important to mention that in case any of the tests comes back positive the ceremony cannot be performed.
  • Important:

    If the wedding couple own the Nationality of the country where the wedding will be performed, they must notify this information in advance to the wedding reservation executive due these type of marriages need to follow different legal requirements.

Marriage certificate


  • Civil ceremonies: The marriage certificate will be given to the couple at the end of the ceremony. If you require additional copies of your marriage certificate please inform your wedding planner during the interview.
  • Important:
    We kindly ask you to verify the procedure that you will have to follow in order to legalize your marriage in your country prior you travel to a foreign country, due sometimes an apostille is required. If you need to Apostille your Marriage Certificate, please be advised that you will have to cover the amount of this service. *Riu Hotels & Resorts is not responsible for this legal procedure.
  • Symbolic Ceremonies or Renewal of Vows: No documentation required.  The couple will receive a marriage certificate without legal bearing after the ceremony.
