RIU Hotels & Resorts works on a daily basis to develop its business in a way that is progressively more responsible towards the environment and the community.
For this purpose, the Corporate Social Responsibility team has an ambitious Action Plan which focuses on three main areas: environment, society and human resources.
We invite you to discover the commitments and objectives that RIU has set in each of these fields, as well as its achievements.
","bloques": [{"titulo": "RIU and other four Mallorcan hotel companies continue their commitment to the future of young Dominicans ","descripcion": "On December 3, there was a graduation ceremony for the 48 Dominican students who participated in the fourth class of the Chance project, a pioneering initiative started in 2015 by the Mallorcan hotel chains Barceló Hotel Group, Majestic Resorts, Iberostar Group, Grupo Piñero and RIU Hotels & Resorts. The goal was to provide training and employment opportunities to youth at risk of social exclusion in the Dominican towns of Bávaro and Verón, where the hotel companies have been present for many years.
The participants received free training through the collaboration of the National Institute for Technical-Vocational Training (INFOTEP in its Spanish acronym), whose teaching staff provided the instruction from July 16 to October 24 in the Ann and Tedkheel Polytechnic School. In the first weeks, the students received training on generic subjects like mathematics, Spanish, English and humanities, as well as specialized tourism courses, including the hotel, kitchen, bar and maintenance areas.
After this training period, the young people started their apprenticeships divided into groups in the bar, kitchen, electricity and air-conditioning departments in five of the hotels owned by the chains in Bávaro. Following their graduation on December 3, the students who pass the course will have the opportunity--the 'chance' as Dominicans say, hence the name of the initiative--to consolidate their professional future in the sector.
Chance was created in early 2015 as the first joint CSR initiative of the hotel chains Barceló Hotel Group, Majestic Resorts, Iberostar Group, Grupo Piñero and RIU Hotels & Resorts, which came together with the goal of strengthening their social presence in the Dominican Republic with community development through training and employment. After these four graduating classes, and those to come in the future, the Chance project has consolidated its positive impact on the Dominican community, with more than 200 young people in total having successfully graduated.

RIU will cover the costs of all the medicines needed at the newly-opened Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit at the Dr Jesús Kumate General Hospital in Cancún, an oncology department that specialises in chemotherapy treatments. This represents an improvement in the quality of life of all children and young people under 18 who suffer from cancer and who, until a few days ago, had to travel to other Mexican states to receive the treatment they needed.
This new department is the only one that offers this service to the public in the northern district of the state. Initially, it will have two paediatricians specialising in oncology and four nurses to attend to patients from Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. This medical team will provide care for children from the provinces of Tulum, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres and Lázaro Cárdenas.
The official opening was attended by several political figures including Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, Director of Health and General Secretary of the Department of Health Services of the State of Quintana Roo. Dr Ignacio Bermúdez Meléndez, the hospital’s General Director, was also present with other representatives of the medical centre, as well as Alma Tesillos, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Americas for RIU Hotels and Yusi Evelyn Dzib Echeverría, President of Fundación Aitana, who is one of the new oncology department’s main champions.
Accompanied by several children from the charity and their families, Yusi gave her heartfelt thanks for the support received from public institutions and the private sector. She made special mention of RIU Hotels, which have shouldered the responsibility to provide all the medical supplies needed to carry out chemotherapy treatments at a cost of 187,000 Mexican pesos (8.523 EUR/ 9.800 USD) a month, for an initial period of two years. After giving thanks, Yusi closed her speech with a few words of hope: “Today, after 9 years of knowing cancer first-hand, I can say without fear of being wrong that cancer is not a synonym for death, but rather for fighting, perseverance and family togetherness.”
Alma Tesillos, RIU’s representative at the event, explained that “participating in a project of this scale, in partnership with the foundation, is a great example of what civil society can achieve when we work together.” She also reiterated the hotel chain’s dedication to the well-being of Mexican children, and that its generous contribution is “an honour for us as a company and a commitment to the people of Quintana Roo.”
Since 2016, RIU Hotels and Fundación Aitana have collaborated to help sick children and their families travel comfortably by first-class bus to Mérida or Chetumal, journeys that take four and six hours respectively that they sometimes have to make on a weekly basis for medical appointments. They also cover flights for those needing treatment in the oncology hospitals in Mexico City and Querétaro, as well as the cost of medication and other expenses relating to their well-being.

RIU Hotels and Resorts and the Ayuda en Acción (“Help in Action”) Foundation have come together for a second year to support the “Aquí También” (“Here Too”) support programme for children at risk of poverty that the organisation runs in Spain and, of course, in the Balearic Islands. This partnership offers children swimming lessons, scholarships and discounts in the school canteens at the CEIP Pintor Joan Miró, IES Josep Sureda i Blanes and CEIP Es Pont schools in Palma.
Over the 2018-19 school year, 75 pupils from CEIP Pintor Joan Miró in the Nou Levant area of Palma will be able to attend swimming lessons at a pool close to the school. At the same school, as part of the support programme for pupils in disadvantaged situations, the cost of meals from the school canteen will be reduced for 90 boys and girls, which helps to relieve their family finances. In addition, scholarships for canteen meals have been awarded to 10 pupils in the learning support programmes at IES Josep Sureda i Blanes school in Son Gotleu, Palma. At CEIP Es Pont, a school located in the same neighbourhood, an extra canteen monitor has been appointed for the purpose of caring for and helping pupils who use the canteen service, as well as encouraging them to develop good eating habits.
RIU wanted to support Ayuda en Acción’s line of work focused on healthy lifestyles for children at risk of social exclusion and poverty, addressing the basis on which the company’s CSR pillars are founded: childhood and health. Last year, also in partnership with Ayuda en Acción, RIU took part in the “Ningún niño sin desayuna” (“No children without breakfast”) programme throughout the school year by subsidising 60 breakfast scholarships for children from CEIP Es Pont school in Son Gotleu.
RIU Hotels’s support for Ayuda en Acción has also been channelled towards the local community, as support will be given to 30 women in vulnerable situations in the form of tools that enable them to increase their social skills and employment opportunities. In 2017, RIU offered employability support for 25 women vulnerable situations in the Son Gotleu and Nou Llevant neighbourhoods: 10 of them trained in basic cooking skills and the other 15 as maids in RIU hotels. In this way, a total of 21 of the participating women, or 84%, obtained work, seven of whom were given contracts for more than three months. A visit to Riu San Francisco was also organised for the training participants, to introduce them to the company and bring them into contact with the world of work.
According to international statistics, Spain has the third highest child poverty rate in Europe, with 28.8% of children at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Ayuda en Acción affirms that childhood poverty and exclusion entail, in practice, a violation of children’s most basic rights: fewer opportunities to enjoy quality education, proper nutrition and the leisure that, as children, they need.
About Ayuda en Acción: Ayuda en Acción has been working for 37 years to eradicate poverty and inequality, contributing to improvements in the nutrition, health and education of nearly two and a half million boys, girls and their families. Today, it is active in 18 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia and it has been running “Aquí También” in Spain for five years, to relieve child poverty in this country. In Spain, we are working within the framework of schools to support families that are at risk of social exclusion in order to attend to the basic needs of children with difficulties and to facilitate their inclusion.

This document sets out the company’s endeavours in 2017 in relation to environmental protection and social action, which constitutes another step on the journey that the hotel chain started in 2012, when its first Corporate Social Responsibility reports were drafted.
With the report’s motto, ‘Focus on You’, RIU has sought to symbolise its responsibility towards all the people that make it possible, its customers and collaborators, along with its commitment to the environment in which its 92 hotels are located. It is an accessible, highly visual document with a clear style, in harmony with its informative purpose, and it breaks down the internal policies, actions and good practices that have been implemented over the course of 2017, and the resulting data is given in graph form. The ultimate aim is to offer a clear and concise explanation of all the information relating to sustainability that may be of use to the RIU Hotels stakeholders.
In the sustainability report’s opening letter, the CEOs of RIU Hotels, Carmen and Luis Riu, affirm that, ‘over the last decade, people and the environment are the two ideas that have been at the heart of the RIU Hotels strategy in relation to corporate social responsibility and that have defined the initiatives we have carried out.’ These two areas of action, social and environmental, form the structure of this report in which the company’s collaborators themselves voice the various actions and projects that RIU carries out around the world and in the majority of which the collaborators themselves are the key players.
Hotel directors and staff, heads of corporate departments and collaborators from the various associations with which RIU works guide the reader through this report that marks the start point of a strategy that will, over years to come, focus on commitments to protect childhood and health, reduce poverty, consume responsibly and protect biodiversity and the environment.
This document has a clear informative purpose, as corresponds to any sustainability report, and its ultimate aim is to make public the actions of RIU Hotels with regard to sustainable development and the company’s capacity to produce economic, social and environmental benefits in the communities where it operates.

This initiative created by the UN, which RIU participated in with more than 20 waste collection drives, united the efforts of all sectors to carry out the world’s largest clean-up .
50 RIU hotels participated in this worldwide clean-up with the collaboration of the staff, guests and the local community. In Gran Canaria, there was a clean-up with 47 members of the staff of the RIU hotels in the southern part of the island, who spend an entire morning covering the areas adjacent to the establishments next to the Charca de Maspalomas and all the way to the Meloneras beach. In Costa Adeje, Tenerife, the staff of the Riu Palace Tenerife and the Riu Arecas covered the area from Barranco del Agua to the coast and organized awareness-raising talks on plastic pollution for both guests and RIU staff.
The Riu Palace Cabo Verde and the Riu Funana on the island of Sal, Cabo Verde, took on the clean-up of the area from Ponta Petra to Punta Sinó, and the Riu Touareg in Boavista collected waste on the Praia Lacacao beach. In the Portuguese Algarve, the staff of the RIU Guarana collected plastic and other waste on the Praia Falesia beach.
And on the American continent, in Panama, they took care of the Playa Blanca zone in Río Hato, while in the area of Guanacaste in Costa Rica, waste was collected along the 4-km stretch of highway from Nuevo Colón to Playa de Matapalo. In Punta Cana there was a clean-up in the vicinity of Playa Macao and Arena Gorda; on the island of Aruba, they covered the area between Signature Park and Depalm Pier in Palm Beach. In Jamaica, they covered three different coastal zones: Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Mahee Bay in Montego Bay and the coast near Mammee Beach in Ocho Ríos.
Mexico was another destination where waste collections were organized. At the new Riu Dunamar in Costa Mujeres, they took care of the most neglected coastline in the area of Isla Blanca, and at the Riu Palace Las Américas in Cancún they covered Playa Mocambo. The Riu Palace Pacifico and the Riu Vallarta covered the green areas around the resorts, while the hotels in Los Cabos held a clean-up on El Médano beach. In Jalisco, the staff and guests at the Riu Emerald Bay took care of the area of Playa Brujas, while the Riu Plaza Guadalajara urban hotel joined this UN project by collecting waste along the train tracks in the city of Guadalajara.
On the other side of the globe, at the Riu Sri Lanka, besides cleaning up Ahungalla beach, they planted 50 coconut palms at an event attended not only by RIU staff and guests but also members of the local community. On the island of Mauritius, the company’s two resorts, the Riu Le Morne and Riu Creole, participated in the waste collection along the entire coastline between the two hotels.
In addition to waste collection, many hotels decided to organize other activities related to the environment. At the Riu Don Miguel, in Gran Canaria, a Solidarity and Environmental Market focused on the creation of all types of utensils out of plastic was organized. The proceeds of this market will be donated to the Plant-for-the-Planet foundation, with which RIU is working in the Canary Island on reforestation of the island.
In Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the six Riu resorts in Riviera Maya joined forces to organize the RIU Environment Fair, which was held in the gardens of the Riu Palace Mexico hotel. In the tents set up for the occasion, guests and RIU staff members took part in a recycling workshop together where they learned to create art using recycled materials.
In addition to coming together for this action to fight plastic, RIU Hotels now offers its customers compostable straws at its hotels in Spain and Portugal; in July this will be extended to Cape Verde, and it is expected to be applied to its hotels in America in 2019. These straws can already be found in over 35 RIU hotels; they are 100% biodegradable and decompose in 40 days without leaving behind visible or toxic waste.
According to the UN, nearly a third of the plastic containers we use cannot be recycled, meaning that they end up polluting the environment. The figures are alarming. Worldwide, one million plastic bottles are purchased and five billion disposable plastic bags are used each year. In total, 50% of plastics are used just once. Likewise, every year 13 million tons of plastic are dumped in our oceans, where they destroy coral reefs and threaten marine fauna. All the plastic that ends up in the oceans in just one year could encircle the Earth four times and remain in this state for a thousand years before completely decomposing.

","img": "/en/binaris/srilanka_tcm55-202076.jpg","enlaces" : []} ,{"titulo": "Compostable straws arrive at the RIU hotels in Spain, Portugal and Cape Verde","descripcion": "Starting on 1 June, RIU Hotels & Resorts will be offering its customers compostable straw at its hotels in Spain and Portugal; and a month later it will do the same in Cape Verde. Likewise, RIU hopes to be able to incorporate them into its hotels in America as of 2019. The initiative that came from the hotel chain's purchasing department and its collaboration with its supplier Emicela, means the total substitution of all of the previous material by these more sustainable products with the goal of helping to reduce CO2, eliminate waste and protect the environment.
These straws, which can already be found at over 35 RIU hotels in the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Algarve, Madeira, Sal Island and Boavista in Cape Verde, are 100% biodegradable and also compostable. In other words they break down in contact with the rest of the organic waste, turning into compost or fertiliser. The decomposition time varies depending on the humidity and temperature, but under normal conditions it takes place in 40 days and without leaving visible or toxic waste behind. A major achievement if we consider that an ordinary straw takes 500 years to decompose.
To promote good use and reduce straw consumption in the bars and restaurants of its hotels, RIU has modified the customer-facing protocol for using them. Accordingly, the compostable straws are only provided when a guest explicitly asks for one, except with some cocktails where they are necessary for drinking. Additionally, the use of recycling containers is being promoted, and the bar and restaurant staff has been informed that the straws should be put in the organic waste container for later composting.
With this initiative, RIU Hotels is moving ahead of the plan presented by the European Commission this week to ban by 2021 a range of plastic items, including straws and single-use cutlery and plates; a proposal that must be accepted by the European Parliament and the EU governments. In addition, the government of the Balearic Islands has also presented a draft law on Waste Prevention to eliminate single-use plastic articles and which could come into force on 1 January 2020. That would be when distribution and sale of plastic beverage straws, among other containers made of the same material, would be prohibited.
In Spain each year five billion straws are used, but in the world and every day this figure reaches one billion. Despite seeming harmless and even decorative in some cocktails, they are considered to be the main source of marine litter, accounting for 4% of the eight million tonnes of plastic waste worldwide.

The 'We Plant Consciences' flora regeneration campaign, sponsored entirely by RIU Hotels, received support from the Plant-for-the-Planet foundation and the City Hall of Gran Canaria.
The tree planters were 40 young people between the ages of 8 and 18 who, under the leadership of the Plant-for-the-Planet foundation, the Limonium Canarias environmental education company and gardeners from RIU, planted one hundred acebiño (ilex canariensis) and palo blanco (picconia excelsa) trees, two laurisilva species native to the area. The children and adolescents, the majority children of RIU Hotels employees, received training as Climate Justice Ambassadors by attending an environmental education workshop with theoretical and practical activities.
These trees, which occupy a 1,200-m2 area, are part of the 'Second Forestry Revolution' launched in February by the City Hall of Gran Canaria and 21 other city halls on the island. A macro-project based on reforestation and forest-fire prevention actions that involves planting 43,000 trees over 154 hectares.
RIU Hotels, a company that is very engaged in the protection of biodiversity and the natural habitats of the destinations where it operates, has joined the Plant-for-the-Planet 'Rural Climate' pact, of which 'We Plant Consciences' is just the first step. Catalina Alemany, manager of the Corporate Social Responsibility area at the hotel chain, states that “these 100 trees are just the beginning of a series of environmental actions we are organising in Gran Canaria and in which we hope not only all our employees but all Gran Canarians will participate.”
The event was attended by the director of the environmental council of Gran Canaria, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, who thanked the children for their involvement in the activities and encouraged them to work for a more sustainable future in which they will be the leaders. Likewise, he thanked RIU 'for its engagement with the ecosystem of Gran Canaria, which goes beyond this act', and expressed appreciation for its 'commitment to the environment'.

- We select packaging made with recycled or biodegradable materials.
- The hotels have facilities to separate recyclable waste.
- A special protocol for the disposal of hazardous waste.
- Rules regarding the treatment of chemical products, paint, solvents, light bulbs and batteries.
- We manage the removal of chemical products and toxic waste responsibly by separating them for recycling and treatment by authorised bodies.
- In this way, we avoid harming nature with hazardous waste and reduce the consumption of energy, water and raw materials required for the creation of new containers.
- There are waste containers in the hotels’ communal areas for paper, glass, plastic and biodegradable waste, which allows waste to be classified according to whether it is biodegradable or not.
- We have installed signs for guests to learn about and follow the hotels’ practices.
- We encourage guests to avoid wasting food in the buffet restaurants.
- We carry out training sessions with our teams regarding recycling and waste management.
Measures applied in RIU hotels in relation to air conditioning, lighting and fuel:
- LED and low-energy lighting in the hotels.
- Lighting systems with maximum efficiency ratings in the spaces where RIU Hotels staff work.
- Replacement of appliances with high- efficiency equipment or class ‘A’ energy rating.
- The implementation, wherever possible, of geothermal air conditioning, as this technology increases energy efficiency by up to 400%.
- Replacement of diesel boilers with natural gas, which produces cleaner energy.
- Automatic air-conditioning switch-off devices in the rooms when guests open doors and windows, to prevent unnecessary energy consumption and loss.
- Installation of solar-powered lighting in the garden areas.
- Timer on and off controls, synchronized with daylight hours.
- Thermal solar energy use for hot water.
Emission-reduction measures applied at RIU hotels:
- The use of less polluting systems, especially in terms of air conditioning, which is the main contributor to our carbon footprint.
- Substituting diesel boilers and other equipment for natural gas.
- The use of less polluting, more efficient machines and appliances.
- We support solid waste recycling, avoiding new materials manufacture and its ensuing increase in greenhouse gases.
- First steps for offsetting our carbon footprint: In 2015, we started calculating the carbon footprint of Riu Palace Costa Rica and Riu Guanacaste hotels.
Biodiversity measures:
- Supporting protection programmes for endangered species.
- Management Plan of WILDLIFE REFUGE in Guanacaste (Costa Rica)
- Actions for animal welfare.
