Description of this project
Waste management in the Maldives, both domestic and those generated by the tourism industry, currently focuses on collection and incineration on the island of Thilafushi. To address the treatment of single-use plastics, such as PET containers, MOPA, with the support of Parley (Adidas) and Coca-Cola, has implemented a program that collects these plastics in Malé and sends them to Taiwan for recycling.
MOPA (Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance) is a national alliance of NGOs that seeks to optimize resources, create partnerships, engage stakeholders, and empower local communities for the safe reuse of single-use plastics in the country.
In this framework, RIU has signed a partnership with MOPA, through which the Riu Atoll and Riu Palace Maldives hotels separate PET containers in specific packaging on a weekly basis. These are collected in Malé for subsequent recycling. Monthly, the amount of kilograms of PET containers collected is reported as part of the commitment to more sustainable waste management.
Creating a network with local (MOPA) and international (Parley) entities to improve the management of single-use plastic waste.
