Hello! Wanted to share our experience at the Riu Guanacaste Resort for our fellow travelers. Rooms were nice, close walk to the beach. Pools were nice; there's only ONE location to eat, if ur at the pool. 5 restaurants, all BUFFET style...so didn't like that very much; expected restaurant styled dining. There IS one restaurant styled, a steak house (have to reserve)...but the food was NOT great. We ended up going to the main buffet after. Entertainment and activities on the resort...not great! Definitely not the same RIU services that we're use to.
"Random Hostility towards Americans at Hotel Riu Guanacaste"
Sixty-some American academic who traveled with family of 5 (incl 3 children now grown adults) from Washington/Baltimore for a week in Costa Rica. Most of us speak Spanish and I passed the US Foreign Service Exam. I've also lived/studied/worked abroad several years throughout the world including in Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Spain, Brazil, etc. and so am familiar with language, culture, and many customs. While most of the Riu staff have been exceedingly friendly and welcoming, I've had several notable incidents of unwarranted hostility from particular individuals. The first I just passed off as someone having a bad day when a tall young man in uniform forced me off the sidewalk in the parking lot. Tonight, the entire staff at the far Pura Vida bar ignored me for +20mins while repeatedly serving 4-5 waves of new customers. Young and old, men and woman, single or multiple patrons - the only commonality was that I was the only identifiable non-Latin American patron. It was both infuriating and embarrassing to have a stream of new faces to my immediate left and right being served around me. I missed the end of the show with my family while waiting to bring them drinks. After the show, my oldest came to tell me he just wanted to go to bed. Now that he is living far away from us and deep into starting his own career, this was precious time lost and a bitter end to what should've been a rare evening together. Again, most of the staff have done a terrific job, but such unusually hostile, unwarranted, unpredictable, and targeted experiences can unfortunately leave a more lasting impression. It's hard not to think these more extreme obvious examples do not reflect a deeper and more widespread latent animosity. Perhaps this is misdirected anger at global current event targeting a family just trying to enjoy their time together in Costa Rica.
