RIU promotes sustainability at events with its new carbon footprint prediction and calculation service

As part of its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy, RIU Hotels & Resorts is launching an innovative service capable of predicting and calculating the carbon footprint of events booked at the Riu Plaza España hotel. The chain’s goal in implementing this service is to offer its clients greater transparency, and to encourage more sustainable decisions when organizing events.

RIU has launched this service at its Madrid hotel, the chain’s leading hotel in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism activity. The hotel has already implemented important sustainability measures, such as offering filtered water, thus avoiding the use of single-use bottles. However, the company plans to assess the possibility of implementing the service in other hotels within its portfolio that have a significant presence in this sector.

This system for predicting and calculating the carbon footprint of each event has been developed in collaboration with CREAST, a pioneering technology platform for sustainable solutions aimed at reducing carbon footprints and operational impact.

The system is based on the hotel’s historical consumption, which allows the environmental impact to be estimated. It also uses artificial intelligence, which plays a crucial role in analysing key data for each event, such as the date, duration, number of guests, rooms or services used, among other elements. This information is used to generate a preliminary estimate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. All of this happens before the client even arrives. Once the event is over, a precise calculation is performed to determine the actual carbon footprint, and a detailed report is sent to the client.

In other words, the procedure implemented by RIU ensures that, alongside the quote for each MICE request, the client will receive a clear prediction of their event’s carbon footprint. Upon completion, a final report will be delivered to them showing the complete traceability of the generated carbon footprint.

This project responds to the sector’s growing demand for sustainable events and aligns with RIU’s overall goal of reducing its carbon footprint, which it has already decreased by 50% (scope 1+2) in the last two years, as part of its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy.
