RIU joins in with the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign on World Environment Day
5 June, 2025Today is World Environment Day, and it’s a key day for the planet! This year, the United Nations is focusing on a problem that affects us all: plastic pollution. Under the slogan #BeatPlasticPollution, they have launched a campaign that calls for joint action to combat this global challenge.

At RIU we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the important role we play, as a hotel chain, in protecting the planet and our landscapes. We have been working hard in this area for years, committed to a more sustainable future, which is why we did not hesitate to join in with this wonderful initiative. Today, 5 June 2025, is the perfect day to take a look at some of the actions we are implementing in our hotels to combat this major challenge that is very much part of our present and which we must eliminate from our future.
The fight against plastic: part of RIU’s philosophy
For us, the fight against plastic pollution is not just a fad. It is a commitment that has been closely linked to our philosophy for years and which forms part of our Proudly Committed Sustainability strategy. As a hotel chain, we are very aware of how important it is to protect the idyllic locations in which we do business and which we have made our home. We know we must care for and protect them. That is why, in recent years, we have been reinventing our processes, looking for alternatives and finding innovative solutions that are now part of everyday life in our hotels. So much so that, today, all our employees and teams understand that every action they take, no matter how small, is crucial. As a result of all the measures implemented, we have managed to reduce the use of single-use plastics per room by 27.7% since 2021.
Today, on the day when the whole world is speaking out in the fight against plastics, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the actions that define us. We are sure to answer many of the questions you have asked yourself over the last few years regarding some of the changes you will have noticed during your stay. But we think it is better to see it than to hear about it, so here is a video where you can learn about and see many of these actions with your own eyes:
Did you know that we do all this in our hotels? At some point, you may have wondered what happened to the amenities in the rooms? This is because RIU has been progressively eliminating single-use plastics in the rooms and restaurants throughout all the chain’s establishments. But we also now demand that our suppliers share our vision, too.
RIU encourages employees and customers to join in with #WorldEnvironmentDay
And that is not all! Our commitment runs even deeper, and our colleagues in the Sustainability Department have launched a global appeal to all hotel teams, inviting them to play an important role in World Environment Day.
How? By encouraging customers to join us on this day through awareness-raising activities like fun workshops for the little ones, where they learn the importance of caring for the planet, and outreach activities for all our guests, focusing on the impact of plastic. But they are also encouraged to carry out clean-ups in areas close to the hotels, or even in the hotels themselves, and provide information about our sustainable initiatives. And, as in 2025 it seems that if you have not posted it, you have not done it, our colleagues will encourage all guests to share their small actions on social media using the hashtags: #ProudlyCommitted #NoPlasticPollution #WorldEnvironmentDay.
At RIU, we believe that the perfect holiday is one that leaves the smallest possible footprint in the environments where we operate, but a huge impression on the hearts of our guests.
