Pilar Güell, wife of Luis Riu Bertrán, who, for decades, has been in charge of construction and housekeeping services for the chain. A tireless worker as well as a personal and professional example for the entire staff. Now, at the age of 87, she receives the recognition and tribute from the entire Riu family.

The use of the RIU name for branding its hotels did not occur at the time of its founding as a family business in 1953. The first hotel to carry the family name was the Riu Palace Maspalomas, which opened in 1989. Before that, the chain's hotels were called Río, in honor of Luis Riu Bertrán's love of Western movies.
