Today is a very special day for our Cape Verdean colleagues on the island of Sal and Boa Vista. Every March 27, the African country commemorates Cape Verdean Women‘s day, when the important and necessary contribution women make to society and areas such as politics, culture, economy and education is highlighted. They play a fundamental role.

Today several events are taking place in different parts of the country to celebrate this special date dedicated to all Cape Verdean women. It is also a day to vindicate and promote gender equality and female empowerment. The celebration coincides with the birthday of Cesária Évora, a poet and activist, one of the most prominent figures in the Cape Verdean music scene, who inspired so many people around the world with her talent.

Approximately 60% of the staff at RIU hotels in Cape Verde are women. At RIU we wanted to join in with this special day and that’s why today we are paying a small tribute to all our female colleagues whose talent and professionalism make it possible for everything to run smoothly in our hotels and for you to go home from your holiday with a smile on your face.

Today we can read the testimonials of three great RIU professionals who work in the Riu Karamboa, in Boa Vista, and who occupy positions of responsibility in the hotel. They are certainly a great example to follow and a reflection of the enormous worth of all our Cape Verdean colleagues. Don’t miss it!

Madilene Graça, second head of animation

We start with our colleague Madilene, who currently holds the position of second head of Entertainment at the Riu Karamboa hotel.  Her job is to steer her team to deliver a final result “capable of satisfying customers and upholding the good name of RIU”.

She started at RIU 12 years ago as an entertainment assistant in the Riu Karamboa, when she was a professional dancer. After a short time she became an entertainer and after taking on more responsibility she was promoted to the position of second head of entertainment: “In the future I aspire to be the head of this department.”

In addition to being an excellent professional, Madeline loves her work because, as she says, it allows her to do what she likes most, which is dancing. “It also allows me to get to know different languages, meet new people every day, and I learn so much. None of this “would be possible without my team, I can’t do it alone” .

For our colleague this day is very important because it commemorates “Cape Verdean women who have a determined personality, we are all special“.

Artemisa Eunice Livramento Santos, reception manager

Now it is the turn of our beloved Artemisa, who has been with us for 16 years. As Head of Reception at the Riu Karamboa, her job is to “ guarantee customer satisfaction, keep the team tight and ensure the well-being of everyone to guarantee that the work goes as smoothly as possible” . She gives us a piece of advice on how to work in this world: “Be very strong, impartial and above all be courageous and know how to behave.” For Artemisa, the best thing about her job is “Living with people of different nationalities, being decisive with problems that may arise in the hotel, and especially being able to help the staff when they need it” because for her, her team is her “second family. We have to take care of each other” . Our colleague has high hopes for the future and plans on one day reaching the position of Assistant General Manager.

She proudly states that “today is a very important day for all Cape Verdean women. It is a day for us and because of us. We are fighters and it is a source of pride and joy to celebrate this.” She also encourages her colleagues to “Keep being strong, determined and dedicated. But without forgetting to love the work and remembering that there are solutions for every problem.”

Elisabete Da Luz Rodrigues, Housekeeper

Finally, we introduce you to Elisabete, housekeeper at the Riu Karamboa. She spends her days “training the chambermaids and supervisors, guiding them in their tasks and organising the daily work.” She says that her work needs her to be “dynamic and capable of resolving various situations, and there are better and worse days.” But without a doubt the best part for her is seeing “the great result of the work carried out.” For Elisabete, just like for her colleague Artemis, “The team is my second family.”

She is looking forward to the future enthusiastically and does not rule out “being a future manager.” She advises her colleagues at RIU “to be strong and warriors” and never “give up on your goals.”

They are a great example for all their colleagues, thanks to their dedication, work and effort. Although today we have told you just three stories, there are many more RIU women who dedicate their talent to this chain.

We would like to wish all of them a fabulous time on the day when the whole country recognises their worth. We hope that everyone’s goals and dreams come true!
