Packing for the Dominican Republic: what to take to a RIU All Inclusive?

14 April, 2026

When travelling to a RIU hotel in the Dominican Republic, you should bring linen or cotton clothing, at least three swimsuits, biodegradable sunscreen, and a type A/B plug adapter. You must include dress shoes for the themed restaurants and a basic first-aid kit for the tropical climate.

Have you already booked your flights to Punta Cana? Congratulations! You’re one step away from tasting the best rum in the Caribbean and letting the RIU Hotels & Resorts team pamper you as you deserve.

But we know that, before you get on the plane, everyone has the same questions: “Have I brought too much?” Have I forgotten anything for the gala dinner?” Packing for an All inclusive in the Dominican Republic is almost an art form. It’s not just about packing swimsuits; it’s about being ready for the tropical sun, island adventures, and RIU’s most elegant nights out. Here’s your ultimate guide so you don’t pack too much, or too little!

1.    Caribbean sun survival kit

The sun in the Dominican Republic is wonderful, but unforgiving. The last thing we want is for you to spend your holiday hiding in the shade because you got sunburnt. Your toiletry bag should include:

  • Biodegradable sunscreen: this is crucial for protecting coral reefs if you decide to visit the gorgeous Saona Island or Cayo Levantado.
  • After-sun with aloe vera: your skin will thank you after a relaxing afternoon in our pools.
  • Sunglasses and hat: style and protection should always go hand in hand.
  • Insect repellent: especially useful if you plan any trips to mangroves, sinkholes, or jungle areas.

2.    Dress code: what should I wear?

Many travellers make the mistake of just packing beachwear. Remember that the themed restaurants in our hotels have dress codes to maintain that special atmosphere that we love so much.

  • During the day: include at least three swimsuits so you’ll always have a dry one. Opt for linen or cotton fabrics. These are breathable and will help you manage the tropical humidity (which is usually around 80%). If you stay at our Hotel Riu Palace Bavaro, remember you can enjoy a moment of complete relaxation in the spa.
  • For the evening:

3. What people “always forget” (and will need)

  • Waterproof mobile phone case: for those amazing underwater photos without the risk.
  • Plug adapter: the Dominican Republic uses types A and B (like in the US). Although our revamped hotels have USB ports, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
  • Basic first aid kit: painkillers, plasters and antacids (the food offer is irresistible).

RIU tip: Don’t fill your suitcase with “just in case” items. Remember that our hotels offer a laundry service and shops with essential items.

Stop! Don’t put this in your suitcase

We want you to save space for souvenirs, so leave these things at home:

  1. Beach towels: at RIU we offer you a free dry-towel service.
  2. Hair dryer: all our bathrooms are equipped with adequately powered hair dryers.
  3. Bathroom amenities: top quality gel, shampoo and soap are waiting for you in your room.
  4. Drinks and snacks: your minibar is regularly restocked and, of course, you’ll have our iconic spirits dispenser in the room.
