Proudly Committed: How did RIU Hotels increase its social investment and environmental sustainability in 2025?

8 September, 2026

At RIU Hotels & Resorts, we have concluded the 2025 financial year by reaching a record figure of 5.13 million euros in social investment, representing a 62% increase compared to the previous year. Through our strategic pillar Proudly Committed, we have spearheaded 119 community projects and environmental initiatives across 22 countries, directly benefiting nearly 70,000 children and adolescents, while achieving Ecostars sustainability certification across 100% of our hotel portfolio.

To which causes did we allocate our social investment in 2025?

At RIU, we understand that tourism growth must go hand in hand with the social development of the communities that welcome us. Throughout 2025, we have deployed 119 strategic initiatives in partnership with 101 local and international organisations, rigorously applying the Método RIU (developed in collaboration with the ESCP business school). This efficient social management model now reaches 78% of our destinations and 70% of the countries where we operate.

Child health and education as a strategic pillar

Supporting childhood remains the heart of our social action. In 2025, we allocated 56% of our social investment to child health and education programmes, successfully impacting 69,244 children and adolescents directly, in addition to reaching another 57,871 indirect beneficiaries.

How do we protect biodiversity and marine ecosystems?

Our commitment to the natural environment intensified significantly during the last financial year, with a 40% increase in environmental initiatives. A 23% of our global actions have been focused exclusively on biodiversity conservation through 28 active projects.

Turtle release and coral regeneration

Among the most notable environmental achievements in our coastal destinations, we are proud to share the following figures:

  • 106,805 sea turtle hatchlings released in strategic enclaves such as Cape Verde and Costa Rica.
  • 12,642 coral colonies implanted and transplanted in marine restoration projects across the Maldives, Mauritius, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Spain.

What progress have we made in energy sustainability and certifications?

Advancing towards climate neutrality and efficient facilities is a daily priority for us. In 2025, we reached a historic milestone by achieving 100% Ecostars sustainability certification across our entire eligible hotel portfolio, meeting this objective one year ahead of schedule (only two recently opened hotels remain, which do not yet have the one-year data history required for certification).

Furthermore, we are pleased to announce that 90% of the electricity consumed by the chain now originates from renewable sources.

Emergency response: Our support for Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa

Social responsibility also entails acting swiftly whenever our communities face crisis situations. Following the passage of the devastating Hurricane Melissa through Jamaica, a destination where we operate 7 hotels, we activated an extraordinary fund of nearly one million euros to mitigate the damage and provide direct support to those affected.
