At RIU Hotels & Resorts, we present Witness of Proudly Committed, a new four-part documentary series for our YouTube channel showcasing the environmental and social projects we support around the world. In the first episode, marine biologist Cui Corrales travels to the Mexican Caribbean to document the partnership between RIU and Fundación Oceanus, A.C. to restore coral reefs.

What is Witness of Proudly Committed and how does it fit into our Proudly Committed strategy?

Behind every environmental and social project are names, faces and thousands of hours of hard work behind the scenes. At RIU, we firmly believe that sustainability is not just about figures or boardrooms; it happens on the beach, under water, and in every community where we operate.

We actively support these projects because they are a central part of Proudly Committed, our global strategy that places sustainability at the heart of every decision we make. This roadmap is built around three key pillars:
People: Focused on health and childhood, community protection, and the development and well-being of our human team.
Sustainable Destinations: Focused on protecting natural ecosystems, the circular economy, the energy transition and biodiversity conservation.
Transparency: Based on business ethics, the international auditing and certification of our properties, and accountability for our social and environmental impact.

This commitment to transparency and sharing our progress has given rise to Witness of Proudly Committed, a new four-part documentary series for our YouTube channel and the next step in an initiative we launched in the Canary Islands in 2025. That first experience with content creators showed us the impact of telling our story from a fresh, authentic perspective. This time, we are taking it a step further: we have invited carefully selected creators to become first-hand witnesses on the ground, giving a voice, reach and visibility to the social investment and environmental impact projects supported by RIU around the world.

Who is Cui Corrales and what is his mission beneath the waves?

The person chosen to kick off this journey is Cui Corrales, a marine biologist and renowned science communicator. If anyone can inspire a sense of respect and fascination for the marine world, it is him.

Cui is not travelling merely as a spectator; he brings the curiosity of someone who understands the fragility of our oceans and is passionate about sharing that knowledge in a clear, engaging and approachable way. With his camera in hand and his fins at the ready, his mission was to explore the depths of the Mexican Caribbean and document one of the region’s most pressing environmental challenges: restoring coral reefs.

The work of the Fundación Oceanus: how are coral reefs restored?

In this first episode, Cui takes us behind the scenes of the inspiring work of Fundación Oceanus, A.C., an organisation led by scientists Gabriela Nava and Miguel García.

Gabi and Miguel founded the Oceanus Foundation driven by a conviction: coral reefs must not only be protected, they should also be restored. Faced with the degradation of these “rainforests of the sea” caused by climate change and human activity, this team of passionate biologists has spent years dedicating their lives to cultivating hope beneath the waves, growing coral fragments to restore the most damaged areas of the marine ecosystem.

The RIU and Fundación Oceanus project: growing corals in the Mexican Caribbean

Coral reefs are home to 25% of marine life and provide the first line of protection for coastlines against storms and erosion. For this reason, as part of the Sustainable Destinations pillar of our Proudly Committed strategy, RIU actively supports Fundación Oceanus’ coral reef restoration programme along the Mexican Caribbean coast.

This partnership helps fund the installation and maintenance of underwater nurseries, where corals can grow in protected conditions before being transplanted onto natural reefs. In this episode, we follow Cui and the Fundación Oceanus diving team through every stage of the process:
From the delicate collection and attachment of coral fragments to the structures.
To the monitoring of restored areas, where we can see life and fish return when science and commitment come together.

At the end of his mission, Cui passes the baton to the next content creator, who will continue the journey to a new destination and bring us the next high impact story.
